In one of author’s remarks in this book, noting “We’re a society trained to watch what’s on and then discuss what caught our attention the next day”, so here I am discussing what caught my attention in this book after reading it.
It is another book (the first self-help book to read) with provocative ideas that I was recommended by a friend and it has just really changed my outlook on the current job market and eventually on what I can do about it. The author shares numerous good stories and good ideas that have generated some good reflections in my mind.
I think any continual learner who believes in continuous improvement will agree with the author’s argument that a true career mission requires two things.
- First you need career capital (skills), which requires patience.
- Second, you need to be ceaselessly scanning your always-changing view of the adjacent possible in your field, looking for the next big idea. This requires a dedication to brainstorming and exposure to new ideas.
To hammer-home the importance of always exposing yourself to new ideas the author claims to have a rule for that: “Every week, I expose myself to something new about my field. I can read a paper, attend a talk, or schedule a meeting. To ensure that I really understand the new idea, I require myself to add a summary, in my own words, to my growing ‘research bible’”.
I’m recommending this book to whoever looking to gain more control over what he/she is doing or even starting his/her own business.
